不管从电视还是网络上，时常会看到有人错把油门当了刹车，造成多车受伤，有的还冲进了路边店铺甚至还有撞到人的。一般把油门当了刹车并不会立即发现错误，而是越踩越深，因为驾驶员认为踩得是刹车，车不停自然要使劲踩，这样往往会行驶较远的距离才会意识到踩错了，或者撞到障碍物才能停下来。造成的交通事故往往比较严重，撞到墙撞到树倒还好说，最重要的是撞到人的风险也加大了。
油门当刹车一般都是新手开的自动挡车型，且处在倒车刚起步阶段，手动挡车型很少会出现。因为不管向前走还是向后走，起步都是由离合器来控制的，想要停车的时候，也是先踩离合后踩刹车，不踩离合就会熄火了。这样离合踩下了，即使把油门当刹车了，一般也不会出现严重后果，只是发动机转速会升得很高，车速依靠惯性向前或向后行驶，刚起步车速不会很快，撞到障碍物也不会太严重。当听到发动机转速很高了，也立即就能发现踩错了。自动挡车型踩错了之后，因违背了自己的驾驶意愿，原本想停车，怎么会越踩刹车速度越快了呢？所有驾驶员都会慌了神，不知所措，大脑一片空白，因此反应也就不那么快。
自动挡起步怎么能避免油门当刹车？注意以下两点就可以了。1.不要怕别人说你是新手，用倒车来炫耀自己开车技术好，或者自己很生气，心情不好的时候开车，倒车也加着油门速度很快。因倒车视线很差，不管新老司机都应该车速慢一点。在平路上倒车，松开刹车不加油门车完全能行驶，倒车时脚就不要离开刹车去加油门了，一直放在刹车踏板上，随时控制车速，这样就不会出现油门当刹车的情况了。
2.从新手开始就养成良好的驾驶习惯，右脚永远不要放在地板上，要么放在刹车上，要么放在油门上，这样能预防行驶的时候踩错。加着油门行驶或者倒车了，需要踩刹车脚是一定要移动的，向左移动踩刹车，不可能不移动脚就踩刹车吧。如果脚已经放在了刹车上，要踩刹车直接踩就可以了，总不至于向右动去踩吧，另外刹车踏板和油门踏板的脚感也完全不一样。当然油门和刹车的位置要分清，不需要刻意去记住，要养成条件反射，踩油门脚向右移，踩刹车脚就向左移，这个条件反射不需要太久就能养成，开个几千公里就可以。如果在坡道上倒车，或者向前走，必须要加油门车才能走，但空间很小，那么在起步之前先做一下准备，想一下刹车在哪里，先告诫自己形成一个意识，要刹车脚就向右移动，不要倒车时心不在焉或者在想别的事情，一般就不会把油门当刹车了。
