中大型SUV一直是豪华品牌在全球主流市场的顶级战场，在这一市场内，每一个产品都有着不俗的实力。而奔驰GLE则是典型的全能派，拥有优异的通过性能，但也在公路性能上略有所吃亏。随着X5、Q7都已换代，获取新鲜感已经迫在眉睫。于是在2018年巴黎车展上，奔驰发布了全新GLE。
历经20年的发展，M级上的休旅式造型在这台新一代GLE上依旧得到了保留，粗壮的C柱搭配隐藏式D柱，强调了整车的生活气息。除此之外，车头的进气格栅面积进一步扩大，双倒L形日行灯条提升了辨识度。
侧面造型更加简洁有力，看起来更符合当下审美，同时风阻系数从0.32Cd降低到0.29Cd，对于SUV实属不易。
尾部主要是在尾窗以下部分做了变动，尾灯变得更细，灯腔内部更强调科技感，包围式的后扩散器造型圆润，显得下盘更加稳健，配合双边共两出的排气，突出了力量感和运动感。同时，为了迎合不同品味的消费者的需求，GLE提供了越野套件和运动套件可选择，不过论整体的气势，其实都不如上一代车型，但也更加精致了，算是有得有失。
内饰是整车变化最大的地方，脱胎自梅赛德斯迈巴赫Ultimate Luxury（极致奢华）概念车的内饰设计，体现出了极致的科技感和豪华感。全真皮包覆的内饰板和随处可见的考究缝线，在用料和做工上都显得更加奢侈，而扶手前方的两个真皮把手能在越野时用来稳定身体。双12.3寸的液晶显示屏，搭载新一代MBUX多媒体系统，支持智能语音和触控操作，中央的COMMAND区域设计更合理，同时中控台的按键也得到了精简，空调控制采用钢琴式按键，借力S级提升自身的豪华调性。
虽然空间方面并不是GLE的擅长之处，但是它依然有着非常舒适的乘坐空间，哪怕是后排座椅一样带有门板上的电动调节按键。这一代GLE还提供了7座版本，为一些二胎家庭消费者带来了使用上的灵活性。
动力方面，先期推出的450版本搭载48V轻混的3.0T直六引擎，最大功率270kW，最大扭矩500Nm，匹配奔驰9AT变速箱，搭载4MATIC四驱系统（越野套件还增加了低速挡和智能扭矩锁止，以及自主车震脱困的黑科技），同时配备了AIRMATIC空气悬架，还可选装更加智能的E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL电控悬架，通过单独控制每个车轮的阻尼和磅数，最大化地平衡运动性和舒适性。
更新颖的设计、更大的空间、更豪华的内装、更高效的动力系统、更极致的越野性能，更令人瞠目的黑科技，GLE的换代远比我们第一眼看到的要更全面更彻底。它的卖点在于更全能的表现以及同级别令大多数对手难以项背的脱困能力，尽管公路的延伸令GLE的拿手好戏变得越来越多余，但是奔驰依旧执着，也许就是让GLE成为同质化浪潮中最特殊且迷人的那一个，来满足土豪们舒适探索的欲望。
