根据国外流传出来的谍照，大概能猜到新X-Trail的外观与规格。
作为三日诺（三菱-日产-雷诺）联盟的成员，三间集团将共用平台来节省开发成本，2021年款X-Trail将与新一代三菱欧蓝德共用同一具底盘平台。 新一代平台除了能提升空间与增加刚性之外，它还能搭配不同动力科技，例如plug-in hybrid插电式油电 混合动力系统。 X-Trail油电混动车型将可以用纯电行驶70公里。
动力方面，新一代Nissan X-Trail应该会以2.5升自然进气4缸汽油引擎为主要动力，并提供高阶车款搭载2.0升VC-Turbo可变压缩比涡轮增压4缸汽油引擎(拥有248匹最大马力与38.8 公斤米巅峰值扭力)。 动力将透过X-CVT变速箱系统传递到前轮或四轮上。
新一代X-Trail的外观结合了劲客、新一代Juke以及Xmotion Concept概念车的设计元素，而内装配备与质感也将是改款的重点之一。
新X-Trail的座舱估计将搭载全数位仪表、悬浮式触控多媒体屏幕系统、抬头显示系统、零重力皮质座椅、WiFi 连接、Apple CarPlay/Android Auto连接功能、360度环景系统以及驾驶模式切换旋钮等。 X-Trail座舱还将导入高质感用料并继续提供7人座车款。
安全方面，新一代 X-Trail将搭载全速域ICC 主动式车距定速巡航、车道维持控制、 FEB 紧急自动刹车(附行人与脚踏车侦测功能)、盲点侦测、后方交通警告以及交通号志辨识系统等丰富的驾驶辅助系统。
新一代X-Trail的对手包含了丰田RAV4、福特 Escape、本田 CR-V、雪佛兰 Equinox、斯巴鲁 Forester、马自达 CX-5、大众 Tiguan、现代 Tucson以及Kia Sportage等。
新一代X-Trail估计将于明年正式发表。
